2021 Student Scientific Conference held at the VNU University of Science

Students of 8 faculties of VNU University of Science (VNU - HUS) were enthusiastic about their participation in scientific reports in the faculty-level Student Scientific Conference. Faculties of Mathematics - Mechanics - Informatics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography had their meeting held earlier in April. After April 30th, due to COVID - 19, students of faculties of Physics, Geology, Environment Science, Hydrometeorology and Oceanography had to opt for online meetings to comply with COVID-19 social distancing regulation.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Trần Quốc Bình, Vice Principal of VNU - HUS, despite the ravaging COVID - 19 adversely affecting education and training throughout last year, VNU - HUS had many remarkable achievements. Students of VNU - HUS and its branch, HUS High School for Gifted Students relentlessly invested their effort in research, experiments, learning from textbooks in Vietnamese and foreign languages, improving their skills in foreign languages and presentation….In 2021, there were 432 scientific reports from students of both schools, a 20% increase compared to 2020.

Aside from the impressive quantity, many reports had a strong impression on teachers and enterprise representatives because of the scale, methodology, and research outcome. Several research reports were published in high profile magazines in Vietnam and in the world. The quality of research works this year demonstrated the dedication and resourcefulness of students and teachers in VNU - HUS.

At the end of the conference, researchers with top quality works were awarded and chosen for school-level competition. Another scientific conference involving everyone at VNU - HUS is expected to be held online on May 10th, 2021.

According to Mr. Linh, scientific research was not merely for publication, but also for solving problems for enterprises and industries in Vietnam and internationally. Conducting scientific research greatly benefited students in helping them orient their graduation thesis, and facilitating their collaboration with enterprises for future career opportunities.

The faculty procured and selected 67 reports this year, and divided them into 3 groups, assigned to 3 sub-committees to do the grading: Math (7), Informatics (8), Poster (52).

“Poster” sub-committee had the largest amount of scientific reports, divided into many smaller groups. Students were advised to participate only when a scientific report was being presented or when it was their turn to present their works.

This year, the Faculty of Physics received 37 scientific reports from students across all academic years. Scientific reports include the following fieldsPhysics, Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering Technology, Electronic Engineering and Informatics. There were 3 first prizes, 3 second prizes, 3 third prizes, and 6 consolation prizes were awarded for the most excellent research works from students.

The  Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Chemistry was held earlier than any other faculties. The Faculty received 93 reports this year, the most amount of reports at this university. 4 of them were indexed by ISI, and 1 published in a domestic magazine. 

There were two rounds of evaluations in the Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Chemistry. The first round featured 21 notable works in the fields of  Inorganic, Organic, Analytical, Physical, Chemical Engineering Technology, Environmental Chemistry, Petrochemical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. All of them had their full-text versions graded, and every report was graded by 3 independent reviewers.

There were 10 outstanding research works to be considered for first prizes and second prizes after the plenary session on the morning of April 26, 2021. The Faculty of Chemistry received 21 Faculty-level prizes: 4 first prizes, 6 second prizes, 11 third prizes.

Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Biology took place on April 27, 2021 with 78 reports.

The most critically acclaimed reports of this year's conference have many new features in their scientific content and progress in research level. Several reports present solutions to genetically modify plants, animals and microorganisms. Many genetic research works were devoted to drug development applications and diseases such as cancer, schizophrenia, epilepsy, gout…. It is noteworthy that there were studies related to the application of the production kit to detect SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogenic RNA viruses. In addition, there were a number of studies related to the biodiversity of groups of animals and plants in Vietnam using modern taxonomic indicators and molecular biology techniques. assessment of water quality based on algae biological index and a number of research orientations to treat polluted environment. These scientific reports had great potential for application in biomedicine and agriculture, two important fields for the socio-economic development of our country today.

Several scientific topics done by students from HUS High School for Gifted Students were also presented there. The students were noted for their proficiency in English.

Also on April 27, 2021, the Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Geography presented 24 reports, divided into 06 main research orientations: Human Geography, Tourism (2 reports); Application of remote sensing, GIS, GPS, monitoring technology in natural resource management and land management (4 reports); Land Management, Land Economy and Real Estate Market (13 reports); Urbanization (3 reports); Sea and island research and coastal zone management (2 reports); Environmental Resource Management (10 reports).

Faculty-level prizes for best reports were handed out, as well as selected 02 reports to submit to the School-level Poster competition, 01 report presented at the school's general council.

The Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Geology took place online on May 6, 2021. Judging committee members listened to reports and gave assessments in room 604 of T5 building while students stayed at home and took the conference online.

There were 26 research reports from students of all academic years in the Faculty. There was a diverse range of topics presented at the conference, from basic research on material and paleontological composition, climate change and sea level rise to application-oriented and application-oriented research such as minerals, geological heritage, geological hazards (subsidence) , desertification, floods and saline intrusion, etc.), groundwater recharge; From research on surface water, groundwater, tourism resources to water, air and plastic waste, all of which are urgent issues today,... The research regions of the topics are also spread across all regions of Vietnam, from the North, the Central, the South to the Central Highlands; from the remote and mountainous regions to the sea surrounding Vietnam.

Similar to the Physics and Geology faculties, the Student Scientific Conference of the Faculty of Environment Science (May 5, 2021) also occurred online. A total of 87 reports were presented in two forms: poster and presentation.

The students of the Faculty of Environment Science have shown their intelligence and diligence working process through elaborate, creative, and research studies from research direction to problem synthesis, presentation method. Many reports impressed the teachers such as: Applying Silchar Composite material on the building of water purification systems; Researching and building an improved model of male urinals towards eco-friendly bio-economy; Toxicity assessment of ion exchangers modified from polystyrene waste to the growth and reproduction of aquatic insect Daphnia. ; Study on removing sulfamethoxazole antibiotic from water by microfiltration membrane (MF) with modified chitosan material by graft polymerization method,...

Q&A sessions between the assessment committee and students took place entirely online. The scientific conference of students of the Faculty of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography also took place online on May 4, 2021 Q&A between the assessment committee and students took place entirely online.

This year, the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography received 11 reports. The research works mostly focus on the application of mathematical models to solve hydro-meteorological and oceanographic problems; using mathematical models to forecast and warn of natural phenomena and highly practical applications such as studies on the phenomenon of clear-air turbulence at the airport, calculation of tidal forecasts. Results: The report "Analysis of clear-air turbulence recorded by aircraft over Vietnam's airspace and application of the WRF model for early warning of the phenomenon" was awarded the First Prize.
