On 05 October, 2017, the VNU University of Science and the University of Witten - Herdecke (Germany) had a meeting with Yen Bai People's Committee. The working session aims to exchange experience, ability to deploy and apply scientific and technical advances in solving urgent problems in the fields of science and technology, natural resources and environment, agriculture and rural development in the province.
The delegation of the VNU University of Science headed by Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Tien Giang - Vice Rector, along with Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Quy - Head of Construction Management Department and Dr. Dao Sy Duc - Secretary of the Youth Union. The delegation of the University of Witten - Herdecke has Prof. Carsten Haneke - Technical Director, Institute for Environmental Engineering and Management.
Welcoming and working with the delegation was Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang - Member of Standing Committee of Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee; leaders of the Office of the Provincial People's Committee and leaders of the Department of Science and Technology, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and representatives of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang said that the province always paid attention to the development and application of science and technology in socio-economic development of the locality. Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee wishes the delegation to study and select suitable contents for construction and implementation of projects in Yen Bai in the coming time.
Based on the potential and strengths as well as the urgent issues of Yen Bai, leaders of two universities and the provincial People's Committee exchanged on the field of the universities has the experience and strengths such as to combat climate change, to treat environmental pollution, to exploit mineral resources and to support human resources training in science and technology, etc. Leaders of the two universities would like to conduct field trips in localities and working with Department of Science and Technology to learn more about the potentials and strengths of the province for specific cooperation programs.
The working session has opened many specific directions for cooperation and the prospect of concrete cooperation between the university and the locality. Representatives of Yen Bai People's Committee, Mr. Nguyen Chien Thang put much trust in the VNU University of Science and University of Witten-Herdecke from Germany with the technology development. The provincial People's Committee hopes that the two universities will have good cooperation with the province so that they can work together to solve the problems mentioned.

In the past time, following the Party's guidelines and orientations for science and technology development as well as the plan, every year, on the basis of the budget allocations from the Government budget, the People's Committee of Yen Bai province has balanced the priorities to devote most of scientific non-business funding for research and development, technological renewal and development of scientific and technological potentials. In particular, the science and technology tasks mainly focus on research and application of scientific and technical advances in agriculture and rural areas in order to serve the objectives of implementing the project of agricultural and agricultural construction restructuring new village. It is known that in the period 2012 - 2016, Yen Bai province deployed 215 topics, provincial science projects, of which 133 topics in the field of agriculture and forestry, 56 subjects in the social sciences and humanities; 26 themes and projects. The scientific and technological tasks have contributed to promoting the socio-economic development of the province.
Prof. Carsten Haneke, Technical Director, Institute for Environmental Engineering and Management, University of Witten-Herdecke, outlines the direction of cooperation and emphasizes the possibility of moving from research to practical application.
The VNU-University of Science and the University of Witten - Herdecke has had a good relationship for a long time. The most typical example is in the AKIZ project - Development of waste water treatment technologies in industrial zones based on the system of reciprocal combinations with environmentally friendly solutions to control waste water and energy production, recovery of useful ingredients for developing countries in the tropics. The model was implemented in Tra Noc Industrial Zone, Can Tho, Vietnam. This project is funded by the Government of Germany. The VNU University of Sciences and Institute for Environmental Management and Techniques - University of Witten - Herdecke are two project coordinators in Vietnam and Germany. On the Vietnamese side, there are 08 universities and institutes involved in the project, including: VNU University of Sciences, Hanoi National Economics University, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, Can Tho University, Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, Institute of Chemistry - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnam Institute of Industrial Chemistry, Institute of Natural Resources and Environment - VNU Ho Chi Minh.
