Booth School of Business (University of Chicago) and Orchid Foundation are willing to collaborate on developing Applied Mathematics curricula with the VNU University of Science.

On October 24th, 2017, Prof. John Birge - Professor of the Booth School of Business (University of Chicago, USA), Mr. Dann Engels - President of the Orchid Foundation (USA) and Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan - UN Communications Manager spent a visit to the VNU University of Science.

On October 24th, 2017, Prof. John Birge - Professor of the Booth School of Business (University of Chicago, USA), Mr. Dann Engels - President of the Orchid Foundation (USA) and Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan - UN Communications Manager spent a visit to the VNU University of Science. Assoc.Prof.Dr.habil. Vu Hoang Linh – Vice Rector and the leaders of the Faculty of Mathematics - Mechanics and Informatics welcomed the visitors and introduced to them the current education programs in Mathematics as well as some projects that aim to promote Applied Mathematics.

At the meeting, Assoc.Prof. Dr. Le Minh Ha - Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics - Mechanics - Informatics briefly presented two new interdisciplinary graduate programs that are based on applications of mathematics. They are Quantitative Finance and Risk Management (in collaboration with the VNU University of Economics and Business) and the Data Science. Prof. John Birge and Mr. Dan Engels highly appreciated the goals and the contents of the two programs and expressed their support and willingness to cooperate on behalf of the Booth School of Business (University of Chicago) and the Orchid Foundation.

The visitors discussed with the leaders of the University and the Faculty of Mathematics - Mechanics - Informatics about the possibility of cooperation in future projects of interdisciplinary programs based on Applied Mathematics

Prof. John Birge is one of the world's leading experts in the application of mathematical tools such as stochastic programming and large-scale optimization in finance and industrial operations. In 1980, he received his PhD in operation research from University of Stanford. Before joining Booth School in 2004, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Operations Engineering, Michigan University Ann Arbor, and Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, Northwestern University. Booth School of Business, where Professor John Birge is currently teaching, is a very prestigious graduate school of business administration in the US.

Mr. Dann Engels is a manufacturer and business man, alumnus and member of the Advisory Board of the Department of Industrial Operations Engineering, University of Michigan Ann Arbor. The Orchid Foundation was founded by his family to support educational activities in general and to grant scholarships at the University of Michigan to students from developing world.
