Vietnam-Korea symposium on sustainable land management and geospatial information technology

In order to further promote cooperation, research and exchange activities between Vietnam and Korea in the field of land management and geospatial information, an international symposium on sustainable land management and geospatial information technology was held on June 29, 2022, by the Faculty of Geography (VNU-HUS) in coordination with the Korea Cadastral Information Association, Geospatial Information Research Institute - Korea Land and Geospatial Corporation.

Over the years, the friendly cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Korea has continually been strengthened and expanded with many achievements achieved in many fields, especially science and technology. Following that line, a Vietnam - Korea symposium on sustainable land management and geospatial information technology was held in order to create opportunities for scientists of the two countries to exchange and share experiences.

The organizers hoped that through the exchange and discussion by scientists and experts from both Vietnam and Korea, the relevant fields would be further developed in both countries and research cooperation activities as well would be further promoted.

In his opening speech, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Quoc Binh - Vice Rector of VNU-HUS affirmed that land is a special resource of every country in the world. Land information systems and land databases, therefore, are important tools for the best implementation of modern land governance in each country. So the development of an effective and sustainable land use and management system is a vital condition for a country to thrive and bring prosperity to its people.

In Vietnam, the strong socio-economic development in recent years has put a lot of pressure on land management, requiring breakthrough solutions to increase efficiency and ensure the sustainability of land use and management systems. To achieve this goal, the Government of Vietnam always attaches great importance to digital transformation and the application of geospatial information technologies, because a complete and multi-purpose land information infrastructure will help to sustainably exploit and manage land, ensure publicity and transparency, bring about high socio-economic efficiency as well as ensure national security and defense, increase national budget revenue and attract more local and foreign investment.

“As Korea has the most modern and effective land management system in the world, experienced in digital transformation and in applying advanced technologies and techniques such as big database, artificial intelligence, cloud, blockchain v.v. to modernize land management system, it is highly practical for Vietnam to learned from Korea in terms of mangagement,” said Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Quoc Binh.

Prof. Lee Seong Hwa, President of the Korea Cadastral Information Association, lecturer at Daegu University hoped that: “through the exchanges at this symposium, the cooperation relationship between Vietnam and Korea on sustainable land management and geospatial information will continue to develop and be more sustainable in the future despite some differences in terms of the two countries’ cultures, politics and economies.”

During its 5 sessions, the symposium on sustainable land management and geospatial information technology mainly focused on these issues:

  • Building a land information system
  • Promoting the field of Geospatial Information
  • Formulation of official land prices and use of human resources
  • Creation of maps and applications
  • Cadastral Survey Project in Korea and Land Law in Vietnam.
