THE World University Rankings 2023: VNU advances in quality of scientific research and teaching

On October 12, 2022, the Times Higher Education announced the results of THE World University Rankings 2023 (THE WUR 2023). Accordingly, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) featured in Group 1000 – 1200 globally of 1,799 ranked universities. In comparison with the 2022 ranking period, THE WUR 2023 has 240 more participating higher education institutions and 137 more ranked higher education institutions.

Implementing VNU’s Development strategy up to 2030, vision 2045, VNU aims to continuously improve its quality of teaching, scientific research, and research results transfer, striving towards the philosophy of sustainable development and enhancing its influence and position. These strategies and activities have been concretized through the ranking results of THE WUR 2023 with an increase in VNU’s rank scores for Citations (up from 41.5 points in THE WUR 2022 to 45.9 points in THE WUR 2023) and Industry income (up from 36.6 points in THE WUR 2022 to 38.9 points in THE WUR 2023).

In the remaining 3 groups of criteria, VNU maintains its leading position among 6 Vietnam’s ranked higher education institutions in terms of Teaching - a criterion on the quality of teaching activities of a higher education institution through the assessment of the international academic community, faculty/student ratio and doctoral training ratio. After the implementation of isolation measures to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic, International outlook has become the highest ranking criterion of VNU.

THE World University Rankings 2023 listed six Vietnamese universities including VNU, Hanoi; VNU, Ho Chi Minh City; Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Duy Tan University, Ton Duc Thang University, and Hue University (listed in this table for the first time).

Also, according to THE WUR 2023, the following 5 universities top the ranking: the University of Oxford, Harvard University, the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The best Asian performers are Peking University and Tsinghua University (China), the National University of Singapore, the University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

The THE World University Rankings provides the definitive list of the world’s best universities, with an emphasis on research of university's core missions according to standardized sets of metrics to provide comprehensive and fair comparisons. Based on Scopus publication data (provided by Elsevier Publishing), independent surveys and university data, THE scoring and data processing is provided by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) - an independent, professional, performance-monitoring audit organization.

The criteria of THE WUR 2023 remain the same as those of the recent world rankings, including the following 5 groups of performance criteria:

1. Teaching (learning environment): 30%;

2. Research (volume, income and reputation): 30%;

3. Citations (research influence): 30%;

4. International outlook (staff, students, research): 7.5%;

5. Industry income (knowledge transfer): 2.5%.
