The Recognition of Improvement Certificate is given to institutions for their significant improvements in rating results based on the improvement in their average ranks. To advance in a QS WUR, an education institution needs to improve not only itself but also its position among the other institutions featured in the same ranking table. This involves reputation, research prestige, and the ability to attract and retain international students and faculty. All these take time to be confirmed, and the Certificate recognizes all the efforts to achieve them.

The QS Recognition of higher education excellence certificate includes the following categories: Recognition of Improvement, Research Excellence, Reputation Impact, New Participating Institutions, Top 10, and Sustainability.

In recent years, VNU has maintained its top 801-1000 position in the QS World University Rankings, but VNU's relative position in the group has steadily increased over the years. VNU has increased its position from the top 78.5% of the world's best universities (in 2019) to the top 65.3% (in 2023). VNU is currently listed among the world’s 101-150 leading young higher education institutions according to the QS WUR Rankings. VNU has also gained recognition in 6 subject areas, specifically: Mathematics named in Group 351 – 400; Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical & Manufacturing; Physics & Astronomy; Business & Management Studies; and Electrical Engineering & Electronics featured in top 451-500; and Computer Science & Information Systems placed in top 501 – 550.
