Delegation from the University of Sciences Visits and Discusses Semiconductor Technology Training Cooperation with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan

For October 23-24, Prof. Vu Hoang Linh, Rector of the University of Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Nguyen Hai, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Physics, visited National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) following an invitation from Professor Edward Yi Chang, Dean of the International College of Semiconductor Technology under NYCU.

An international joint master's program in Semiconductor Technology, accredited by NYCU, has been operational at the University of Sciences since 2020. During this visit, discussions focused on establishing a permeable bachelor's-master's program to cater to the high-quality human resource development demands of the semiconductor and semiconductor chip manufacturing industries in Vietnam.

The delegation from the University of Sciences was welcomed by Professor Chi-Hung Lin, Director of NYCU; Professor Ta-Sung Lee, Vice Director; and Professor Edward Yi Chang.

In the meeting, NYCU's leadership expressed a strong intent to further enhance its collaboration with the University of Sciences in educational and research activities in the field of semiconductor technology.

As part of the visit, the delegation from the University of Sciences toured NYCU's semiconductor technology laboratories and met with Vietnamese master's and doctoral students specializing in Semiconductor Technology at NYCU.

NYCU is a leading university in science and technology in Taiwan, with its main campus located in Hsinchu City, home to the Hsinchu Science Park, often likened to Taiwan's Silicon Valley with over 400 high-tech companies in operation. The delegation from the University of Sciences visited the R&D Center of TSMC - the world's leading chip manufacturing conglomerate based in Hsinchu Science Park. TSMC's research and development center, newly inaugurated in July 2023, employs about 7,000 experts. Here, TSMC's university relations department shared their highly effective collaboration experience with NYCU, including joint research in shared laboratories at the university; internship programs and scholarships for students and trainees; as well as cooperative education in certain courses and issuing certifications

Besides engaging with representatives from Taiwanese universities and the electronics industry, the University of Sciences delegation also met with Mr. Vu Tien Dung, Head of the Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei. They discussed the Office's support for cooperation between Vietnamese and Taiwanese universities, especially in semiconductor technology and chip manufacturing.

Students from the first two cohorts (2020-2022 and 2021-2023) of the international joint master's program in Semiconductor Technology have excellently defended their theses at NYCU. Six continued their doctoral studies in Taiwan and Australia, and two were employed by VinES (VinGroup) immediately after graduation. Ten students from the 2022-2024 cohort are currently studying and researching at NYCU, with five receiving summer internships and scholarships from Micron Technology, a leading global company in RAM and data storage device production. Thirteen students from the 2023-2025 cohort are in their first year at the University of Sciences, progressively engaging in research activities with their mentors at NYCU.
