Second Training Workshop on Regional Climate Modelling for Southeast Asia

The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Regional Climate Modeling for Southeast Asia was organized by the VNU University of Science (VNU-HUS) in late October.

The Opening Ceremony of the 2nd International Conference on Regional Climate Modeling for Southeast Asia was organized by the VNU University of Science (VNU-HUS) in late October. The workshop took place at the Le Van Thiem Hall, 19 Le Thanh Tong, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi, and was organized by VNU-HUS, International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy and Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrometeorology and Climate Change (IMHEN) with the participation of nearly 60 national and international scientists in the field of climate change.

The ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Filippo Giorgi - Director (ICTP), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Thang - Director, PhD and Mai Van Khiem - Deputy Director of IMHEN. VNU-HUS was represented by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Noi - Rector, Prof. Dr. Phan Van Tan - Head of VNU research team and leaders of functional departments.

Regional climate models (RCMs) have become important tools to study climate variability and change at regional scales. They can also be used to provide climate change information for impact and adaptation studies. The Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) provides the basis for generating multi-model RCM-based regional projections globally. The community of users of the ICTP regional model RCMs is one of the most active in contributing to the CORDEX program and in involving the scientific community from developing countries in climate change research. With the aim of enlarging and strengthening the RegCM user community, the ICTP organizes a series of training workshops in different regions of the world. This workshop represents the second of a series of RCMs training activities in Southeast Asia.

The first workshop for Southeast Asian countries was held in Manila, Philippines in May 2015, with six participants from Vietnam. This second workshop is aimed at young scientists from Southeast Asian countries, and Vietnam has been given priority to send more members. The workshop is an opportunity for the Vietnamese community, especially young scientists, to exchange knowledge and improve the application of RCMs in Vietnam.
